Campi Flegrei Mandarin Festival

The 9th edition of the Campi Flegrei Mandarin Festival will return from December 18, 2021, to February 26, 2022, and again be organised by the Associazione l'Immagine del Mito. An eagerly awaited festival is the culmination of work carried out to preserve and enhance this exceptional citrus fruit of our territory, the Mandarin of the Campi Flegrei. Over the years, the association has achieved excellent results in preserving citrus groves and mapping them, as well as the scientific interest in cultivation by the Federico II University of Naples. Moreover, restaurant owners and bartenders have become involved and sparked creativity in using the Phlegraean mandarin in their recipes.
The event programme includes various meetings to be held in December, January and February on the island of Ischia and throughout the Phlegraean area. Guided visits to the places hosting the festival are also planned. The event will be at Villa Matarese in Monte di Procida this week.

Carnival at the City of Science
The craziest and most colourful time of the year is coming! What are we talking about? Well, about Carnival and the colours it brings! City of Science is dedicating a long weekend to Carnival with many activities, including experiments and science shows, filled with knowledge, creativity and fun! We will try to understand how many colours exist and how we perceive a different number of colours than another! We will study the characteristics of 'camouflage' animals, masters of camouflage in nature; we will build a multicoloured pinwheel: an exciting experiment for the first approaches to physics. Plus, we will bloom coloured flowers from filter paper thanks to the Borbone Kids Lab and explore Bubble World soap bubbles.
From the amphitheatre to the Macellum on the trail of ancient Puteoli
On Saturday, 18 February, at 10 a.m., the Misenum Association welcomes you on a guided tour to discover Pozzuoli's major Roman monuments. We will visit the third largest amphitheatre in Rome, after the Colosseum and the Amphitheatre of Capua. Afterwards, we will go to the harbour to see the grandiose Macellum from inside and admire the fundamental details of the site's history close up.
Walking tour Bacoli with guided visit to the Piscina Mirabilis

On Sunday, 19 February, at 9.45 a.m., we will start from the Bacoli lakeside, retracing the events that saw the centrality of the Campi Flegrei during the Roman Empire. The tour will continue towards the historic centre of Bacoli, where we will discover the "Sibilla", a mural by the renowned Campania street artist Jorit. From the antique centre, we will go to the discovery of the Piscina Mirabilis, a giant cistern for water supply ever built by the Romans, a unique site whose shape reminds us of an actual cathedral. Its original function was to supply the Roman naval fleets stationed at Misenum, which was, therefore, filled with water up to the surface. Today, you can walk through it and understand the greatness of the engineers who built it. The large quantity of water, making it second only to the cistern in Istanbul, reached its destination through a series of canals. The site, built in opus reticulatum (aka "reticulate work" with diamond-shaped pieces), gives a magical feeling thanks to the evocative beams of light that enter its interior due to the "windows" at the top. It is a scenery enchanting any visitor, even since the times of the 18th century Grand Tour, with clear written evidence of it on its walls. At the end of the itinerary, we will stop at the Cantine Mirabili winery, a true oenological excellence of the Phlegrean territory, with a tasting of local wines.
Ancient Cumae and the Cave of Sibyl
On Sunday, 19 February, at 10.15 a.m., you will have the chance to discover Cumae, in Latin Cumae and Greek Kýmë, according to sources, the oldest Greek colony in southern Italy. Celebrated by Virgil in the 6th book of the Aeneid, Cumae is the most mysterious place in the Campi Flegrei. Here, myth and history coexist in archaeological traces covering a historical period from the 8th century B.C. to 1207, the year of Cumae's destruction. Then, the visit will continue to:
the Acropolis, the sacred city with the remains of temples;
the Cave of Sybil, the site of the myth of Apollo's priestess.
MEETING: 10.15 a.m. Archaeological Park of Cuma ticket office. Visit duration: approx. 2 hours.
Walking: from Lake Acherusio to the Quarantine forest

On Sunday, 19 February, at 9.45 a.m., the excursion will begin at the Casina Vanvitelliana Park after a short stop at the Bourbon hunting reserve. We will walk through the citrus grove to reach the entrance to Lake Fusaro. The ancient water mirror of unsuspected volcanic origin will feature various environmentally significant biosystems. We will walk along suggestive bridges built over old mouths, encountering Roman and medieval ruins. Sightings of numerous species of aquatic avifauna are possible, including the Little Egret, the Cattle Egret, and the wonderful Kingfisher. On the bank opposite the Casina, lush Mediterranean scrub mixed with holm oak woodland welcomes us to the Parco della Quarantena. The entire area, used in the last century by the Naples Zoo as a pitstop for incoming animals, now extends along the edge of the lake in a series of wild and mysterious paths. The undergrowth, similar in origin to the ancient Selva Gallinara, has thrived for centuries with its blackberry plants and ivy under the shade of holm oaks. Amidst the ruins of the now abandoned offices, we retrace the historical stages of a place that is primarily unknown but has enormous naturalistic potential.
